Cardiology is a branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis and treatment of congenital or acquired cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases are still the leading cause of death worldwide. Two of the most common heart diseases are angina and myocardial infarction.
Besides treating cardiovascular diseases, heart failure and abnormal rhythms, the cardiologist also specialises in cardiovascular prevention and patient rehabilitation following cardiac revascularization, either cardiac surgery or percutaneous angioplasty.
A clinical examination takes place in which different techniques are used to provide a more comprehensive evaluation:
These techniques are very important in the diagnosis and monitoring of clinical data since they allow a far greater assessment than a single assessment of blood pressure or an electrocardiograph.
Furthermore, the exercise stress test still remains the cornerstone in the diagnosis of ischaemic heart disease, but it is also used to monitor patients in medical therapy after infarction, or for high blood pressure and arrhythmias.
However, clinical evaluation is still the most important element in the doctor-patient relationship, the foundation of any diagnostic indications and an ongoing relationship for future check-ups.
Sports medicine, besides the exercise stress test that is always performed with a cycle ergometer, frequently requires a preliminary echocardiographic assessment that can be rapidly performed before the ergometer test. In addition, our Centre is equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic devices that can be used for specific clinical indications (heart RMI).
