Plastic surgery is the branch of surgery that aims to correct and repair morphofunctional defects or tissues loss (skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia, muscles, bones, etc.) from either congenital causes, or due to traumas, growths or degenerative diseases.
Plastic surgery works on all parts of the body. This means that plastic surgery has several sub-specialities: head and neck surgery, breast surgery, hand surgery, body contouring, lower limb surgery, burn surgery, reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery.
The most important reconstructive techniques used are skin grafts and flaps.
A skin graft is part of healthy skin that is removed from an area of the body and used to replace lost or damaged skin.
A skin flap is healthy skin tissue that is partly detached and moved to cover another body part.
Aesthetic surgery is a branch of plastic surgery aimed to improve physical appearance. It is also called cosmetic surgery.
Surgical interventions may include face surgery, especially nose, eyelids, chin and ears. They can also be used for the removal of wrinkles (facelift) or for fat transfer (lipofilling).
Breast surgery includes breast augmentation, breast reduction or firming. It may also be used on the male body in the case of gynecomastia.
Cosmetic surgery also concerns abdominoplasty for muscle reconstruction of the abdominal wall, as well as liposuction which is the removal of fat tissue.
