Heart surgery is a branch of medicine concerned with the surgery of the heart and blood vessels connected to it.
New discoveries in cardiac pathophysiology and continuous technological innovations of the last few decades, have led to exceptional results in the diagnosis of both congenital heart disease and acquired heart diseases and in the pathology of the great vessels and arteries (especially carotid arteries).
The most frequent diagnoses in heart surgery in adults, relate to:
1. Assessment of heart valves (aortic, mitral, tricuspid valves, and on rare occasions the pulmonary valve) following infectious, congenital or degenerative diseases
2. Assessment of the ascending and arch aorta for aneurysms or dissections.
3. Assessment of coronary bypasses.
4. Assessment of the surgical correction of severe arrhythmias, usually atrial fibrillation.
