The Doppler ultrasound, or simply Doppler, is a non-invasive, easy to repeat procedure that is used in medicine for the real-time study of the anatomical and functional state of the blood vessels, arteries, veins and the heart. It takes its name from its operating principle, the Doppler effect.
The ultrasound is used to study the morphology, motility of vessel walls and the presence or absence of formations inside. On the other hand, the Doppler evaluates the hemodynamic situation of the blood flow at a specific point to then quantify the various degrees of stenosis. This methodology is currently used with the colouration of the blood flow in order to have even more precise information on it.
The Doppler is recommended for the study of vascular structures. Thanks to digital colouring, the Doppler is able to examine the direction and speed of the blood flow. The method combines a real-time ultrasound image with a Doppler signal.
Usually, the red colour is attributed to structures closer to the probe while the blue colour for those more distant. The procedure offers the possibility to identify and monitor over time arterial venous stenosis, aneurysms, deep venous thrombosis and chronic venous insufficiency.
Doppler tests can be done in the following areas:
